Backup Excuses

At Storage Visions last week Deepak Joseph presented some new research from the Consumer Electronics Association. One of the survey questions asked why people don't backup their computer:

CEA - reasons for NOT backing up

This data is pretty close to a Harris Interactive report (PDF) commissioned by Maxtor back in 2005. The biggest shift is that more people don't see the need for backup and fewer think that backup is too expensive.

The ~50% of people that don't backup at all is a worrying constant in these kinds of studies. It's a massive failure that the consumer electronics industry has failed to educate their customers. Not to pick on Microsoft, but I've written about backup in Windows 7 being crippled and a second class citizen to other security needs in previous posts.

(Thanks to the CEA for allowing me to reproduce this slide. Contact research@ce.org for more information on CEA research).
