Distributing content as well as on-line back-up and disaster recovery are driving demand for remote storage. This session exposes the storage requirements and trends for on-line content delivery and remote storage. Learn about new business opportunities and how they’ll impact the growth and use of storage in this growing market.

If you're not attending Storage Visions I'll also be at CES on the 7th and 8th. Get in touch if you'd like to meet up at either conference.

Skype 4.2 Beta Not Compatible with Cucku Backup

Update February 8, 2010: We've just released Cucku Backup 2.11. This update works around the incompatibility in Skype 4.2 beta. If you experience Error 104 "Message: Failed to register application with Skype" after installing Skype 4.2 then you need to install Cucku Backup 2.11.

Skype released a beta version of 4.2 yesterday. The beta currently causes a crash in Cucku Backup, specifically an Error 104 (unhandled exception) when attempting to communicate with a backup partner.

We're investigating this problem now, and I'll update this blog post as soon as we have any news. For the time being please don't install Skype 4.2 if you're using Cucku. If you have already installed 4.2 then uninstall Skype and reinstall Skype 4.1.

Update December 12, 2009

The problem seems to occur when Cucku and Skype have administrator privileges. This means the crash is very likely to happen on XP. On Vista it will happen if you're running both Cucku and Skype as admin - with User Account Control enabled this will only be the case if you run both with elevation.

We've narrowed the crash down to a change in enumerating streams and have filed a bug report with Skype - SPA-699: Beta 4.2 - COM Exception accessing SKYPE4COMLib::Application.Streams after success Application registration and creation.

I'll update again when we have more information.

Update December 14, 2009

If you already have Skype 4.2 installed then downgrading is more complicated than just removing 4.2 and installing 4.1. Follow the instructions below to get Cucku working with Skype again:

  1. Exit Cucku and Skype.

  2. Uninstall Skype 4.2.

  3. Run an admin (elevated on Vista) command prompt.

  4. Type Regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Skype\Skype4COM.dll" and hit Enter.

  5. Reboot.

  6. Exit Cucku if it ran automatically.

  7. Delete the file "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Skype\Skype4COM.dll".

  8. Install Skype 4.1.

  9. Run Cucku again.

If you need more help with this contact support and we can guide you through the process.
